I recently discovered a new way of playing the current playlist on my 3G iPhone even if it’s locked.To display the controls, rapidly press the home button twice while it’s locked and it will display the controls shown below:
A set of iPod controls will appear below the clock and give you access to play/pause, skip/repeat, and volume controls.
Note: Tested this on iPhone OS 2.2
