Latest Snow Leopard AirPort client update fixes WiFi sharing

Internet sharing via AirPort on Snow Leopard

For a few weeks now, I’ve been looking for a way to share the Huwawei broadband modem over WiFi so I can also use my iPhone even if someone is using my Macbook Pro. Before this fix came out, it was impossible to share the internet over AirPort. Now, I can use my MBP for internet sharing over WiFi!

About AirPort Client Update 2009-002
This update is recommended for all Macintosh computers running Mac OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.2 and includes fixes for the following:

  • Inability to turn AirPort on or off in some cases after upgrading from Mac OS X Leopard
  • An occasional loss of network connection when using Wake on Demand
  • Inability to create a computer-to-computer network, or share the Internet connection on some MacBook, MacBook Pro, and Mac mini computers

Internet sharing using AirPort

It’s very easy to share your internet connection over AirPort, first step is to open System Preferences and then click on Sharing.

Click the Sharing button to open the sharing preferences

Once your inside Sharing, select Share your connection from: and select HUWAWEI Mobile (the name might be different if you use a different wireless 3G modem). You also need to setup AirPort for sharing.

While WPA encryption is not supported, you have the option to use WEP 40 or 128-bit encryption. That’s better than no protection at all. As for the Channel selection, you can select Automatic or you can select the best channel. You need to change this if there’s another device (a WiFi access point or another notebook) is using the channel. It’s best to leave this setting to Automatic. Once you’re done setting up AirPort, you can now start sharing! This is the easy part. Just check the tick box near Internet Sharing (see Fig. 3).

You’ll know if WiFi sharing is successful if the signal indicator looks like this:

It still doesn't work for me.

I'm sorry to hear that, Ben. What version is your Snow Leopard? Have you upgraded to 10.6.2?

Running: 10.6.2, Latest Update Installed.
Still doesnt work……Except if an existing wifi network is within range with internet. the airport icon scans and then shows the grey ice-cream scoop with a computer inside it and it succesfully creates an ad-hoc wifi network. Turn off the external wireless router and cannot create network.

How ironic that the only time I can create an ad-hoc wifi network is when I am already in a wifi network.

Grrr to SL wifi!

That used to be the case before I upgraded to the latest update. Now, I can share my wireless broadband via AirPort. Have you tried fixing permissions using your SL disc? I did this before I upgraded.

Mac mini with 10.6.2: Fine before update, broken now!!!

It's the same for me, I turn it on, and it shares for 2 min, then just stops, and I have to re-tick internet sharing again,
which it will then work well for another 2 minutes, very annoying mac, thinking of going back to windows 7.

mine also is not working correctly. I am on an iMac, about 4 months old and have 10.6.2 installed and updated AirPort but still no luck. When I try and create a computer to computer network a error message appears which simply states there was an error creating your network. Not to helpful in trying to diagnose what is going on.

When I use the airport options in the sharing section no error message appears however this does not create a recognizable network and the icon for airport does not change to include the arrow.

Upgraded to 10.6.2 on late 2008 macbook— no wifi, couldn't even turn on airport….used airport client update 2009-002 and can now turn it on and off, but still can only get seconds of wireless connection, then it cuts out. cannot share internet connection from cable. Tried all the little fixes advised on forums, no luck…very frustrating.

Hi Sally. What's the output like when you run Console? Here's a screenshot of Console <a target='_blank' title='ImageShack – Image And Video Hosting' href='http://img13.imageshack.us/i/screenshot20100202at111.png/'><img src='http://img13.imageshack.us/img13/9712/screenshot20100202at111.png' border='0'/>. Have you tried booting with the Snow Leopard disc and then repairing the permissions?
