The threat is real, here comes the Google Phone

Google is coming out with a new phone based on Android 2.1

Way back in November, people have been talking about Google’s ultra-secret project — a phone built from the ground up using Google’s Android operating system. Some skeptics have regarded this as a myth until now.

So, what’s the deal with the new Google Phone, also known as Nexus One? After all, a lot of people have already seen Android-enabled phones from HTC and recently from Motorola and Samsung. What will set the Google Phone apart from the competition? Well, it has Google’s signature all over it for one and it will not be exclusive to any phone company — it will be sold directly and via retailers as an unlocked phone. According to TechCrunch, Google has been involved in all aspects of the phone design to ensure all apps work perfectly. Some people who have seen and privileged to be the first users of the phone say that it’s like an iPhone on steroids.

Is it going to unseat Apple’s flagship product, the iPhone? Maybe and maybe not. It’s too early to say right now since the phone is not yet in production. There are a lot of factors to consider:

  • Price. Is it going to be cheaper than the iPhone and other smart phones in the market?
  • Applications. People will expect popular social networking applications to be on their phones: Facebook, Twitter, Flickr, etc.
  • Camera. What type of camera is it going to use? I’m guessing it has to be at least more than 2 megapixels.
  • Synchronization. It has to synchronize address books, emails, pictures, music, videos, etc.

Sorry folks, you won’t get your hands on the new Google Phone until January 2010. Apparently, Google employees were already given a head start last week when they were each given the new Nexus One.
