Google pulling out China

While the world is supportive about the announcement of Google that it’s pulling out of China in the name of free speech, the move is not without any skepticism. Why is the world’s biggest search engine bowing out of the race in China? Does it really have to do with cyber attacks, which Google claims is being aimed at Gmail accounts of Chinese human rights activists?

The move sent ripples around the world but it didn’t seem to generate that much noise in China, where internet access is highly censored. As news of the pull out reached China, young people flocked to Google’s China office to lay floral bouquets and notes at the sign bearing the company’s logo. “I think Google’s departure from the Chinese market would be a big loss to Google, though not as big a loss to China because Baidu and other search engines are still rising,” Mr. Rao, a staunch supporter of the Chinese government, said in an interview. “Any company in China has to abide by Chinese rules, even though there are some times when the rules may not be so reasonable,” he added.

What’s your take on Google’s move?
