Rediscovering EDSA

The main artery of Metro Manila that connects the northern and southern part of the metropolis is the Epifanio de los Santos Avenue which is known to many as simply EDSA. Formerly known as Highway 54, it stretches some 54 kilometers and is, by far, the longest avenue in the Philippines.

EDSA passes through the cities of Pasay, Makati, Mandaluyong, Quezon City, and Caloocan. It also a witness to the two peaceful demonstrations that toppled the administration of two Filipino presidents—the People Power Revolution of 1986 against Ferdinand Marcos and the EDSA Revolution of 2001 against Joseph Estrada.

Some of the major malls that can be found along EDSA:

  • SM North
  • Trinoma Mall
  • SM Megamall
  • Shangri-la Plaza
  • Southgate Mall
  • SM Makati
  • Robinson’s Galleria
  • The Gateway
  • SM Mall of Asia

You can also find a lot of hotels along EDSA but Shangri-la Hotel, near Shangri-la Plaza, Holiday Inn Manila and Crowne Plaza Hotel near Robinson’s Galleria, and Dusit Thani Manila, near SM Makati are a cut above the rest. These hotels will cost you anywhere between $50 to $200 per day. There are also smaller budget hotels like Sogo and Eurotel, which are usually under $50 per day and are strategically located near train stations. Most of the hotels along EDSA accept major credit cards.

While there’s a scarcity of bars and restaurants along EDSA, it is quite easy to get to major party areas like Quezon Avenue, where there’s an abundance of adult entertainment, Metrowalk in Ortigas for the young professionals, and Timog in Quezon City for mix of food and entertainment.
