What happens when you allow stupid people access to firecrackers? Yes, you got it right — body parts blown into pieces.Year after year, ever since the Chinese popularized the use of firecrackers to drive away “malas” and evil spirits, Filipinos haven’t learned any lesson from the countless stupid people who have already lost their limbs or lives due to firecrackers.
In Australia, firecrackers are banned and only licensed pyrotechnicians who are licensed to handle these materials are allowed access. In Sweden, only rocket-type firecrackers are allowed. Some asian countries (e.g. Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore) have also started to ban the use of firecrackers.
In the Philippines, however, the only place firecrackers are prohibited is in Davao City. Hundreds of people suffer every year as a result of injury related to firecrackers despite the campaign of the government reminding people, in appallingly graphic detail, what happens when you blow your limbs up. Some even die because of mishandling and just plain stupidity. Just take a look at the news[1][2].
I guess people will continue to buy firecrackers as long as it’s available. The government should completely ban firecrackers or make it harder for people to manufacture, distribute, and acquire it. People’s lives are more important than celebrations with firecrackers.
